Algeria return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014 with a squad built around Riyad Mahrez and a generation of European-based talent that has been waiting for this moment.
They missed the 2018 and 2022 tournaments and the frustration of those absences has sharpened the hunger in this squad. Vladimir Petkovic has built an attacking, dangerous side that can hurt anyone on their day.
Algeria are drawn in Group J of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Argentina, Austria and Jordan..
The group draw handed Algeria the most famous possible opening fixture. They face defending champions Argentina on June 16 in Kansas City. It is the biggest game in Algerian football in 12 years. Mahrez, 35, has confirmed this will be his last major tournament. The entire squad knows what is at stake. Win the Austria and Jordan games and they are through regardless of what happens against Argentina. That is the minimum target.
Algeria’s World Cup History
Appearances: 5 | Best finish: Round of 16 (2014) | Group stage exit in 1986 and 2010
Algeria made their World Cup debut in 1982 in Spain and announced themselves immediately. They beat West Germany 2-1, the Miracle of Gijón, becoming the first African team to defeat a European nation at a World Cup. They also beat Chile but were eliminated in extraordinary circumstances.
West Germany and Austria played out a 1-0 result in their final group game that sent both teams through at Algeria’s expense. The result was so obviously manipulated that FIFA changed the rules afterwards, introducing simultaneous final group-stage games to prevent it happening again. Algeria were robbed of a place in the knockout rounds at their very first tournament.
They returned in 1986 in Mexico but went out in the group stage without winning a game, drawing with Northern Ireland and losing to Brazil and Spain. In 2010 in South Africa they failed to win any of their three matches, drawing 0-0 with England and losing to the USA and Slovenia.
Then came 2014 in Brazil, their finest hour. They beat South Korea 4-2 in a thrilling group-stage game, drew with Russia and reached the round of 16. They took eventual champions Germany to extra time before losing 2-1. It was the performance that showed what Algeria could do at this level and the one this squad wants to match or surpass.
The Manager
Vladimir Petkovic
Bosnian · Algeria manager since 2024 · Former Switzerland national team manager, Lazio, Young Boys · Age 62
Petkovic was born in Sarajevo and built his coaching career in Switzerland over more than two decades. He managed a string of Swiss clubs before taking charge of the national team in 2014. In seven years with Switzerland he guided them to the 2018 World Cup, where they beat Serbia in the group stage before losing to Sweden in the round of 16. His finest moment came at Euro 2020, when Switzerland beat world champions France on penalties after a 3-3 draw in the round of 16 before losing to Spain in the quarter-finals on penalties. It was Switzerland’s best ever result at a European Championship.
He was appointed Algeria manager in February 2024 after Djamel Belmadi resigned following a group-stage exit at the Africa Cup of Nations. Petkovic qualified Algeria for their first World Cup since 2014 and arrived at the tournament with a squad he has rebuilt around high-energy pressing and attacking intent. He is pragmatic enough to organise a defence but his instinct is to go forward. The big names in this squad give him the options to do exactly that.
Tactical Setup
Formation: 4-3-3 / 3-4-3
Petkovic uses a 4-3-3 as his base, with the freedom to shift into a 3-4-3 when Algeria want to push forward. Mahrez operates from the right, drifting inside onto his left foot to create and shoot. Mohamed Amoura leads the line with pace and directness. Ibrahim Maza provides creativity from the left or through the centre. Houssem Aouar controls the midfield tempo. The system demands high pressing when Algeria lose the ball and quick vertical play on the transition.
Algeria’s defensive record is the concern. They can be opened up by teams with quick attackers and the high defensive line Petkovic likes carries risk. Against Argentina that vulnerability will be tested severely. Against Austria and Jordan it is less of an issue. Petkovic’s experience of managing at major tournaments, both with Switzerland and now Algeria, gives him the tactical tools to adapt when needed.
Key Players
Riyad Mahrez
Winger · Al-Ahli · Age 35 | Algeria caps: 113 | International goals: 38
Mahrez is Algeria’s greatest modern player and one of the finest wingers his generation has produced. He won the Premier League with Leicester City in 2016, earning the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award. He won the Champions League with Manchester City in 2023. He has won the AFCON with Algeria, multiple Saudi Pro League titles with Al-Ahli and four Ballon d’Or nominations. At 35 he has said this will be his last major tournament. His pace has reduced but his technical quality, his ability to create from nothing and his leadership in big moments remain exceptional. Algeria need him performing at his best in Kansas City and beyond.
Mohamed Amoura
Forward · Stuttgart · Age 24 | Algeria caps: 20+
Amoura is the most explosive attacking talent in this Algeria squad and the player opposition defences fear most when he is running at them with space. He plays for Stuttgart in the Bundesliga and has established himself as one of the most dangerous forwards in German football over the past two seasons. His pace, his directness and his clinical finishing make him a nightmare for defenders who give him a yard. He gives Algeria a threat in behind that no team in Group J can ignore. If he hits form at this tournament, Algeria go deep.
Ibrahim Maza
Midfielder · Hertha Berlin · Age 20
Maza is the youngest and most exciting player in this Algeria squad. At 20 he plays for Hertha Berlin in the German second tier and has been one of the most talked-about prospects in North African football over the past year. His vision, his ability to play through tight spaces and his composure on the ball at his age set him apart. Petkovic has given him real responsibility in the squad and the World Cup stage could be the moment where Maza introduces himself to the world. He is the future of Algerian football and this tournament may be the start of his global reputation.
Houssem Aouar
Midfielder · Roma · Age 27 | Algeria caps: 30+
Aouar is Algeria’s midfield organiser and the player who sets the tempo when they have the ball. He plays for Roma in Serie A and brings a technical quality and passing range that gives Algeria a different dimension in possession. He is not a high-energy pressing midfielder but his ability to control a game when things are going well is exactly what Petkovic needs behind the more attack-minded players. In games where Algeria need to manage the ball and wait for their moments, Aouar is the one who makes that possible.
Ramy Bensebaini
Defender · Borussia Dortmund · Age 30 | Algeria caps: 40+
Bensebaini is the best defender in this Algeria squad and the player who gives Petkovic a genuine quality option at the back. He plays for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and his combination of defensive solidity, aerial ability and willingness to get forward from left back gives Algeria both protection and an extra attacking outlet. His experience at the highest level of European football is the foundation of Algeria’s defensive structure and his partnership with the rest of the back four will be critical in determining how far they go.
Algeria’s World Cup 2026 Fixtures

LeagueLane Verdict
Algeria’s World Cup comes down to two games. Beat Jordan on June 22. Then arrive at the June 27 game against Austria in Kansas City with a result to play for. Win that and they are in the knockout rounds for the first time since 2014.
The Argentina opener is the hardest possible start. Petkovic’s side are not equipped to beat the world champions over 90 minutes but they are capable of making it uncomfortable and taking a point would be one of the results of the group stage. Algeria need to take care of Jordan first and then give everything in the decisive game against Austria.
For a betting angle, Algeria to qualify from Group J offers genuine value. The attacking quality of Mahrez and Amoura gives them more goal threat than Austria in a direct shootout. Amoura to score at least once in the group stage is a reasonable play at odds that reflect his relative obscurity outside German football. This is Mahrez’s last dance. He will not let it go quietly.
