Austria World Cup 2026: Squad, Key Players, Tactics and Predictions

Austria return to the World Cup after 28 years and they arrive in better shape than any Austrian side of the modern era. Ralf Rangnick has transformed this squad into one of Europe’s most organised and competitive national teams.

They qualified with 19 points from eight games, topped their UEFA group and arrive in North America with a genuine belief that they can reach the knockout rounds.

Austria are drawn in Group J of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Argentina, Algeria and Jordan. For all our World Cup 2026 predictions and analysis visit LeagueLane.

The last time Austria were at a World Cup was France 1998, when they went out in the group stage. The generation that has qualified for this tournament has never experienced this stage before.

David Alaba captains the side with 111 caps and leads a squad that includes 14 Bundesliga-based players and an experienced core of footballers who have spent years competing at the top level of European football.

Rangnick’s stated minimum target is to get out of the group. He means it.

Austria’s World Cup History

Appearances: 8 | Best finish: Third place (1954) | Group stage exit in 1998

Austria have a rich and largely forgotten World Cup history. They were one of Europe’s finest teams in the 1930s, finishing fourth at the 1934 tournament in Italy, losing 1-0 to the hosts in the semi-finals before losing the third-place play-off.

Then came the Anschluss in 1938, when Austria was absorbed into Germany and the national team ceased to exist for the duration of the war. They returned in 1954 in Switzerland and produced their finest ever performance. They beat the host nation 7-5 in the quarter-finals, a match that remains the highest-scoring game in World Cup history. They lost 6-1 to West Germany in the semi-finals but won the third-place play-off against Uruguay to finish third.

After 1954 they qualified in 1958 but went out in the group stage, then returned in 1978 in Argentina. That campaign produced one of the most celebrated moments in Austrian football history when they beat West Germany 3-2 in Cordoba in the second group stage. The result eliminated the hosts and is still spoken of as a national moment of sporting pride.

They qualified again in 1982 and 1990, going out in the group stage both times. Their last appearance before this one came in 1998 in France, where they were eliminated without winning a game.

Twenty-eight years have passed since then. This squad is determined to do better.

The Manager

Ralf Rangnick

German · Austria manager since 2022 · Former RB Leipzig, Schalke, Manchester United interim, Hoffenheim · Age 67

Rangnick is one of the most influential figures in world football. He is widely credited as the father of gegenpressing, the high-intensity pressing system that transformed German football and influenced a generation of coaches including Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel. His work at RB Leipzig created one of the most dynamic clubs in European football. His brief stint as interim manager at Manchester United in 2021-22 was not a success but his impact on Austrian football has been remarkable.

He took charge of Austria in 2022 and immediately demanded a different standard of fitness, organisation and tactical discipline. Austria finished top of their Euro 2024 qualifying group, reached the round of 16 at the tournament and then qualified for this World Cup with the same controlled efficiency. His system requires every player to understand their pressing responsibilities and defensive shape. There are no freelancers in this squad. Every player presses when the ball is lost and every player knows where to be. Rangnick has openly said his minimum objective is to get out of the group stage. He believes this squad can do it.

Tactical Setup

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Rangnick uses a 4-2-3-1 that becomes a high-pressing 4-4-2 when Austria lose the ball. Laimer and one of the midfielders sit as the double pivot, protecting the back four. Baumgartner operates as the number ten, creating chances and linking midfield to attack. Sabitzer provides energy, goals and pressing intensity from the left. The system demands enormous work rate from every player. When it clicks, Austria can suffocate opponents in their own half and transition quickly into dangerous positions.

Austria’s main attacking threat comes from combinations between the midfield runners and Arnautovic or Gregoritsch leading the line. Set pieces are a significant weapon. This squad has the physicality and the technical ability to create and score from dead-ball situations and Rangnick has made sure that part of their game is drilled to the highest level. Against Algeria on June 27, if both teams need a result, Austria’s set-piece quality could be the decisive factor.

Key Players

David Alaba

Defender · Real Madrid · Age 33 | Austria caps: 111 | Captain

Alaba is Austria’s most decorated player and their captain. He ruptured his ACL at Real Madrid in December 2023 and the injury that followed was one of the most testing periods of his career. He missed Euro 2024 entirely, attending as a non-playing captain. He has worked his way back to fitness and has been confirmed in Rangnick’s squad as the captain and leader of this group. His experience, his technical quality and the authority he carries in the dressing room are worth as much as his performances on the pitch. Rangnick has been cautious about his playing time but Alaba at any level of fitness is a different leader for Austria than anyone else they have.

Marcel Sabitzer

Midfielder · Borussia Dortmund · Age 31 | Austria caps: 80+

Sabitzer is Austria’s most important outfield player and the one who sets the intensity and standard for the whole team. He plays for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and was part of their run to the Champions League final last season. He brings energy, pressing quality and the ability to score important goals from midfield. He runs more ground than almost any other midfielder at this tournament. His combination of technical quality and physical intensity is the perfect embodiment of Rangnick’s system and without him Austria are a significantly lesser team.

Christoph Baumgartner

Midfielder · RB Leipzig · Age 25 | Austria caps: 40+

Baumgartner is the most technically gifted player in Austria’s squad and the creative force that makes their attacking play function. He operates as the number ten and his ability to find space between the lines, play through tight situations and create chances for the forwards gives Austria an attacking dimension they would not have without him. At RB Leipzig he has been one of the most consistent performers in the Bundesliga and arrives at this World Cup in the best form of his career. Against Jordan and Algeria he is the player most likely to produce the decisive moment.

Konrad Laimer

Midfielder · Bayern Munich · Age 27 | Austria caps: 40+

Laimer is the engine of Austria’s midfield and the player who makes Rangnick’s pressing system work from the inside. He plays for Bayern Munich and his combination of relentless work rate, ball-winning ability and composure in possession gives Austria the defensive midfield platform they need. He covers an extraordinary amount of ground without the ball and his pressing intensity is matched by very few players in this tournament. When Austria are out of possession, Laimer is the one who leads the hunt to win it back.

Marko Arnautovic

Forward · Red Star Belgrade · Age 37 | Austria caps: 132 | International goals: 47

Arnautovic is Austria’s all-time record holder in both caps and goals. At 37 he is the oldest outfield player in the squad and this World Cup is almost certainly his only one. He plays for Red Star Belgrade and scored eight goals in qualifying, including four in a 10-0 win over San Marino. He is not the force he was at his peak at West Ham or Stoke City but his experience, his physical presence and his ability to lead the line and bring others into play make him a valuable option for Rangnick. The World Cup is a fitting final chapter for Austria’s greatest modern striker.

Austria’s World Cup 2026 Fixtures

  • 16 June 2026: Austria vs Jordan at Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara
  • 22 June 2026: Argentina vs Austria at AT&T Stadium, Dallas
  • 27 June 2026: Algeria vs Austria at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City

LeagueLane Verdict

Austria’s tournament depends on two results. Beat Jordan on June 16 and they control their own destiny. Arrive at the Algeria game on June 27 with something to play for and Rangnick’s tactical preparation gives them a genuine chance. Algeria have more individual quality but Austria have the system, the organisation and the discipline to make the June 27 game in Kansas City one of the most difficult nights of Algeria’s tournament.

The Argentina game in Dallas on June 22 is a chance to show what this squad can do against the very best. Austria will not beat Argentina but Rangnick will not set up to simply absorb pressure. He will look for moments on the counter, use set pieces as a weapon and ask his players to press as high as they can for as long as they can. A point against the world champions would be one of the great results in Austrian football history.

From a betting perspective, Austria to qualify from Group J is the play. They are well organised, tactically sophisticated and have the players to beat Algeria in a direct contest. Back Sabitzer to score in the tournament at odds that reflect his profile outside England and Germany. He is one of the best midfielders in this group and his goal threat from deep positions is something Algeria will struggle to deal with.
